Eyup FretHeads!
If you're new to guitar, there are some fundamentals you absolutely need to grasp, and one of the most crucial is knowing the names of the strings.
Now, these aren’t your typical names like Terrence or Robert.
We need to get a bit creative here! Let’s dive into how you can remember your guitar string note names quickly and easily.
Step 1: Understanding the Basics
--------------------------------
First off, let’s take a look at the guitar neck. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the headstock and the strings.
Some folks find it easier to remember strings by their numbers—six, five, four, three, two, one.
That’s a solid start, but here’s the kicker: we often refer to these strings by their note names when we get into chords, scales, and arpeggios.
The standard note names are E, A, D, G, B, and E again.
But let’s be honest, who’s going to remember that?
Step 2: Create a Mnemonic
-------------------------
That’s where a mnemonic comes into play. Instead of struggling to remember E A D G B E, we can craft a story or phrase that sticks in your mind.
For younger students, I often use: “Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears.” It’s simple and effective!
If that doesn’t resonate with you, think of someone you know whose name starts with an 'E'. Perhaps Eddie?
You might have heard the classic, “Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.”
It’s catchy, and the beauty of it is the E strings at either end share the same name!
Step 3: Personalise Your Mnemonic
---------------------------------
But wait, let’s make it even more personal.
In a workshop with kids, we created a wild version that I still remember: “Evil aliens die gruesomely by earwax.”
Can you come up with your own version?
The more personalised your mnemonic, the more likely it is to stick in your memory.
